What’s working?
- 100% working OS X retail/vanilla netbook
- CPU with Hyperthreading
- Sleep (closing lid, return with any key, sadly not by only opening lid)
- Powerbutton
- Sound (internal speakers and output)
- Microphone (internal mic and input)
- Graphics with QE/CI and even VGA out
- Screen brightness (Fn+F5/F6)
- Camera (Photo Booth and Skype...)
- Batteryindicator fully working
- Automatic sleep
- WiFi (exchange the original with a Dell 1510 or any other halfsize PCI you know works)
- Ethernet
Warning: Do not upgrade to 10.6.2, stay at 10.6.0 (10.6.1 works but you have to reinstall a few kexts). 10.6.2 ends support for Atom processors!
Problems?
As this guide is written for a 1005HA with the 4400mAh battery there might be some compitablity issues for some. The batteryindicator might not work as expected. Other than that, everything should be fine!
Just follow my lead and let’s begin!
What you need:
- The 1005HA Snow Leopard Kit (download here)
- Retail Snow Leopard DVD
- 1005HA, 1008HA or similar Eee PC (guide made with a 1005HA)
- USB Drive, either harddrive or memory, min. 8gb
- Another computer running OS X
- A USB-mouse and keyboard
Create the USB Installer:
- Mount your retail Snow Leopard DVD
- Launch Disk Utility and select your USB drive (USB memory or USB harddrive)
- Select the Parition tab and choose GPT (Guid Partition Table) under Options.
- Use Mac OS Extended (Journaled) as format.
- When finished, go to Restore tab and select your Snow Leopard DVD as Source and your USB drive as Destination.
- Launch myHack installer and select your USB drive as destination
- Under customize, check the following (uncheck the ones that aren’t listed)
com.apple.Boot.plist
EvOreboot.kext
NullCPUPowerManagement.kext
SleepEnabler.kext
- Press Install
- Navigate to the USB drive and go to Extra/Extensions.
- Copy all the kext’s I provided to this folder, located inside the folder Kexts in the kit.
- Copy dst.aml to /Extra folder, replace the com.apple.Boot.plist with the one i provided.
Installing:
- Plug in your USB mouse and keyboard.
- Hook up your USB drive to the 1005HA/1008HA and turn on the computer.
- Press Esc and select the USB drive.
- Chameleon will now show up, just choose your USB drive and press enter (if encountering problems, boot with ”-v” without the quotation marks and write in comments where you get stuck)
- If all goes well you will be greeted with the language selection.
- Open Utilities/Disk Utility and select you internal drive, partition it (1 partition, Mac OS Extended (Journaled), GPT, GUID Partition Table)
- Close Disk Utility and select the internal drive
- Click on Customize, select if you want printer support or not, additional languages and check Rosetta.
- Press Ok, and Install
First boot:
- Press Esc and select the USB drive to boot.
- Press any button when you see Chameleon to abort the autoboot.
- Now select your internal drive and press enter and let it boot.
- If all is well the “Before you begin...” should show up. Follow the guide!
- When it’s completed, you should see your desktop.
- There are only a few steps left. DON’T reboot until I say so!
- Navigate to the USB drive and open myHack installer. Do exactly as you did before, except select the internal drive as destination.
- Now transfer all the files to Extra located in the Extra-folder in the kit.
- Transfer the kexts from the kit “/System/Library/Extensions” to the same folder on the internal drive.
- Double-click the VoodooHDA.prefPane inside the kit (/Sound). And install for all users.
- Run pfix, select you internal drive.
- Now shut down your computer, and unplug the USB drive.
Second boot:
- Power on the computer and let it boot.
- Everything should now be working!
Customization:
- DSDT patching: This might cause some trouble for you guys, i included my DSDT patch, but they are kind of personal and only works as they should if it's exactly the same hardware, hopefully we all have the same. If not, you should try to make your own. Here's a .zip containing the necessary files. Use DSDT patcher to make your dsdt.dsl and drop it inside iASLMe to make the dsdt.aml that you drop in /Extra. I included my dsdt.dsl file for you to compare with, some fixes are made and you have to copy them to your DSDT. If you don't understand what to do, use Google!
- In the System Preferences, there is a PreferencePane named VoodooHDA, you can customize your sound/microphone and such here.
- Open the SMBIOS.plist (/Extra) with a textedit if you want to edit the hardware.
Enjoy, and please donate if you like it, thanks!
Hi All,
ReplyDeleteGlad to see some new folks are getting the hang of it! This is cool -- I'm getting all sorts of compliments from friends and passerby's that see the EeeMac in action! New question today about built-in wifi performance.
I used an EnGenius 9707 wifi dongle before I downloaded the 10.6.5 kext to enable the built-in wifi, which seems to be flakey. I have to turn the Airport on/off... delete System Configuration files periodically, etc.
The Airport is flakey but the wifi dongle seems bullet proof. So question for those using the built-in wifi. Is the Airport connect working reliably or do you find it to be flakey, too?
@Alan C
ReplyDeleteIt's rock solid for me. I'm connecting through a Belkin wireless/router using my stock Atheros AR8295 which is running in 'g' mode at 54, channel 11 (2400MHz), WPA2, RSSI -42.
You can get that info by holding down option while clicking the AirPort icon in the menu bar, for those who haven't discovered that Easter Egg.
I have never had to turn AirPort on and off or to delete its system prefs or plists.
Try using a different channel in case you're geting interference from a powerful nearby router and the WiFi is sensitive to conflict. (Sounds like my ex-wife...).
Does your stock WiFi work OK in Windoze?
And of course, I meant AR9285, not 8295. Dyslexia? Cr@ppy typing? Lousy memory? All of the above?
ReplyDelete*Sigh*
@Alan C
ReplyDeleteI've just done some digging around using my setup (1 older Airport Express -11g, 1 newer Airport Express -11n, 1 Airport Extreme -11n) and the stock wifi card will connect to them all happily at 11g, but not at 11n (2.4Ghz). The windows drivers will, and I've yet to try the linux ones. The newer Airport's had to be set to only transmit 11b/g to work correctly.
Hope this helps!
Hi! Having trouble getting my stock WiFi to work. I D/L the kext, installed w/KextHelper, ran Pfix, and still seeing "Airport" grayed out in Network Prefs. I deleted the kext & tried again, no luck. I must be missing something basic. I'm still at 10.6, which from what I understand is OK, I just needed the WiFi kext, right? Any help much appreciated. The EnGenius dongle works, but it seems flaky...I have to reconnect often to keep it working for some reason.
ReplyDelete@SweeneyP
ReplyDeleteGreat detective work there. So the kext as it stands won't provide 'n' standard connections. Good info, and might be all we need to find a way to get it working consistently.
Thanks a bunch for your efforts!
@the Nightfly
ReplyDeleteYour problems may be related to the last couple of posts. Can you just check also that the wifi is enabled in your BIOS? I imagine it is but you never know.
@Nightfly
ReplyDeleteI couldn't get the kext to work with 10.6, it worked once I upgraded to 10.6.3, must be something to do with the changes in the kernel etc. The kext itself came from a beta 10.6.5 build.
@AndrewNZ
ReplyDeleteJust tested Ubuntu, and could quite happily connect to 11n networks at 2.4ghz. I understand that the ar9285 card itself in theory should be able to connect to both 2.4ghz and 5ghz networks, but Asus have only used one antenna.
@SweeneyP
ReplyDeleteFrom all accounts, the card runs perfectly under Windows7 with n and g routers so it's definitely the driver in OS X that's creating the probs. I don't have an n spec router to test with or I'd try editing the kext myself. It's the Atheros21 kext according to System profiler, so it'll be easy to isolate within the IO80211Family.kext.
Maybe I can scrounge one from a friend. I have a hex editor lying about someplace that I can install and do a string search or two.
Or I could wait until some clever person sorts it for us. Not that it's an issue with me because my router's a g model anyway.
Just a pain to be so close to the perfect Hackbook. Oh well...
@AndrewNZ
ReplyDeleteto be honest, I'm quite happy with the 11g working on the stock card, after all you're limited by the speed of your internet connection anyway! Looking at the info.plist in the Atheros21 kext, it's actually for an ar9380 card...
On another note, I've had some funky issues with my com.apple.boot.plist...
Using Netbookinstaller to do the 10.6.3 install, and with JoQ's GMA950 kexts and the com.apple.boot.plist in the kit, I continually booted into a white screen. The install had worked because I could shut it down using the power button and the enter key. I could get the screen working by using the install drive to boot, and then selecting my HDD. In the end I substituted the com.apple.Boot.plist from JoQ's kit with the one installed by Netbookinstaller, and good times! Is there any additional lines in the boot.plist I should add, or any I need to remove?
Hi,
ReplyDeleteI´ve got a problem creating a new partition with disk utility.
First disk utility didn´t find my internal harddisk - I´ve solved this making a change into the BIOS.
Now disk utility could find my internal harddisk but could not create a new partition or delete the existing partition. There is only the Harddrive visible without any partition and it shows a sice of 0 byte.
I´ve a 30 GB Win SP Fat 32 Partition and 130 GB empty on the internal drive.
Could someone help me?
Thanks
@SweeneyP
ReplyDeleteI changed the reference for AR9380 to AR9285 in the Atheros21 plist to see what happens and nothing died. Of course, I don't know if it helped anything either, not having an 'n' router. :)
My com.apple.boot.plist was changed from JoQ's original when I updated to 10.6.3 but I failed to note what changes were made. You could open each in plist editor and compare though. If you don't have plist editor, get it. It's a very tidy little utility.
well, i followed the instructions to the letter, and all i got was a blinking underscore on boot from USB on eeepc 1005HA.
ReplyDeleteany ideas ?
@trudel69
ReplyDeleteDownload NetbookMaker latest version and use it to apply the boot files to your USB flash drive.
HTH
@AndrewNZ i thank you for that quick awnser, i will try that
ReplyDeletei would like to point out that i am using an image of retail snow leopard, since all i got for a mac is an iMac G3 under Tiger without DVD-rom (and the cd-rom is busted) do you think that it might be part of the problem ?
@trudel69
ReplyDeleteThe dmg of SL won't be an issue as Disk utility will restore fine from that once it's been scanned as part of the restore process.
To be fair, I have no knowledge of any limitations inherent in Tiger that would prevent you restoring from that OS, but I can't claim there aren't any. If NetbookMaker runs, then the rest should be a doddle.
But alas, things never seem to be quite that easy. :D
Try the NBM utility and see what happens. If you get the stick booting OK, then you won't need your Mac again. (Hopefully...)
Cheers.
@AndrewNZ
ReplyDeleteas you seem to have semi-suspected, NBM does not work under Tiger. would another boot utility work ? i remember one that was called either EFI or AFI , something like that, it had a logo looking like Star Wars Empire Strikes Back...
so close to having a hackintosh , and my actual mac is the only thing between me and my dream, oh cruel fate :P
another point, i ordered a Dell 1015 wi-fi card, and ha received a 1395 (well, i actually didnt read the sticker, i just installed it) and, noticed afterward that windows recognized it has a dell 1395, any chance it works anyway ?
ReplyDelete@trudel69
ReplyDeleteEmpireEFI runs from a CD so if you can borrow an external optical drive, you can download the EFI iso and burn it to CD. I haven't heard of EEFI being restored to a USB flash drive though. So maybe not.
If you have (cough) access (cough) to a Leopard dmg file, you could upgrade your Mac to Leopard and then all should be peachy. I've um... heard... er... that such files can sometimes 'pour' themselves down from the interwebs.
You won't need the Dell WiFi card as the stock card works now with the kext referenced in previous posts. But over to you. Yes, I believe that model is supported in SL.
@AndrewNZ
ReplyDeletethank you for your time
install\upgrade to leopard from a dmg, no disc ?
plus , i had cyber-stones thrown at me for asking if leopard would work on G3 500mhz PPC 256MoRAM.
but, even slow as hell, if it is going to work, sure (c:=m
@trudel69
ReplyDeleteYou should be able to do the upgrade from your USB stick. Copy the dmg to it and double click it in the Finder. If the installer spits the dummy and says you need to restart and boot from the install disk, then you've hit the wall.
As to whether Leopard on G3 can be done, there's YouTube videos showing that it's possible, but who knows what hoops were jumped through to do it.
Another approach is for you to buy an external optical writer and do the EFI CD, get the install completed and then take it back to the place you bought it and say it doesn't work with your G3 and get your money back. Not particularly ethical, but pragmatic in the extreme. :-)
If I were you, I'd bite the bullet and buy myself a decent slimline external dual-layer DVD writer. In fact, that's exactly what I did, although for reasons other than EmpireEFI. Got a skinny Samsung SE-S084. It's awesome and highly portable.
But you need the readies - about $100US I think it was. Recommended though if you can afford the luxury.
Good luck with whatever road you choose to take.
Cheers.
i have a fucking issue : i use a 10.6.3 dvd, myhack doesn't boot, and i have an issue with appleintelcpupowermanagement (invalid cpu)
ReplyDeleteany clues?? please answer it's very important
@Anonymous
ReplyDeleteGo here.
http://osx86.sojugarden.com/installer/
Read the guide carefully and hopefully your issues will be solved.
So strange - to have a fully (?) operational Mac in such a small netbook. I appreciate all that you guys/gals have done. Strangest of all was putting the 2 Gb RAM in and the battery meter working just like others have said. Dell 1510 half card worked very easily too. Thanks again. TG
ReplyDeletei've had a great hackintosh on my 1005ha for a couple of months now EXCEPT that my gf just updated the software...my fault for not warning her! I think it updated to 10.6.4, i'm not too sure since nothing boots up. She did it by "checking for updates" on the main menu bar. Previously i was running 10.6.0 and installed it exactly the way joQ's guide tells me to (as opposed to netbookinstaller). Now i get stuck at the apple logo after i choose mac HD from chameleon...I was going to wipe my hard drive and start again but i don't wanna lose my files....can anyone help me? *cough*Andy*cough*
ReplyDeleteAnother strange one. Putting in 2 Gb RAM also fixed the ability of the Fn key to let me adjust the brightness of the screen with eeePC's F6 and F7 and turn the wifi on and off. Maybe even more will work? Not the sound adjustment however. TG
ReplyDelete@Timtational
ReplyDeleteuse the -v flag in Chameleon to isolate the place where the boot is stalling and report back. You'll probably be loading the vanilla kernel which doesn't support Atom CPUs and panics.
But there could also be other issues, so list the obvious errors.
You'll need to switch to Netbookmaker and netbookInstaller if you want to keep using Apple's vanilla kernels, or you'll be downloading and installing a hacked kernel and modifying com.apple.boot.plist to load it.
A nuisance, but not the end of the world. I personally recommend going the NetbookInstaller route as Chameleon will pach the kernel as it loads which seems to be a elegant solution to lack of Atom support.
YMMV though.
Let us know what verbose mode tells you.
Cheers.
I've got the eject usb devices at wake issue, does anyone have a solution for it, apart from patching the DSDT.aml file? Updated to 10.6.4, not using nullCPUpowermanagement.kext, instead using the netbookinstaller CPUUID.kexts to get around the KP of unsupported CPU. Using voodoopowermini.kext for speed stepping as well.
ReplyDelete@AndrewNZ
making the change in the version.plist of IO80211Family/Atheros21.kext hasn't changed anything, still no 11n 2.4ghz. It didn't KP though!
Found this post regarding the Chameleon options for com.apple.boot.plist.
http://forum.voodooprojects.org/index.php?topic=351.0
Timtational, Why would anyone (except your GF?) want to update past 10.6.0? Is there something my 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it' mentality is missing? TG
ReplyDelete@SweeneyP
ReplyDeleteI have the USB not ejected properly warning on wake but I've learned to ignore it.
Thanks for the Chameleon options link. I shall have a play.
Cheers.
This is completely off topic, and definitely one for those of you who remember tape drives and typing in program listings but...
ReplyDeletehttp://www.retrotogo.com/2010/08/commodore-pc64---modern-day-pc-in-original-commodore-64-casing.html
SWEET!!!
@TG
ReplyDeleteLOL that's why i never updated to 10.6.1 or 10.6.2 etc....
@Andy
Weirdest thing happens in verbose....after 5 seconds into verbose mode, the screen turns all black! =S I'm pretty sure it's still on because the fan's still running but pressing anything doesn't do a thing...just stays blank...i'm completely lost now....
Simplest answer seems to start all over. If that's the case, is there any way i can save the files on my hard drive?
@timtational
ReplyDeleteThat has the hallmarks of a kernel panic related to the display. If you haven't tried verbose mode simultaneously with safe mode, it's worth a go.
Have you made any recent change to com.apple.boot.plist? During boot, the graphics mode is dictated by that config file. if it's a mismatch, it can cause a KP. Not common I'll admit, but it has happened to me.
About now you're probably thinking about cloning your working setups to ease the pain of fixing the fruits of your latest tweak. :-)
Do it. It makes the experimental stuff so much more pleasurable and less sphincter puckering. CarbonCopyCloner and SuperDuper are the popular favourites, and my recent discovery, RsyncX, is an option to consider.
To save the files, connect the Eee's HDD to another computer and use a unix based cloning app to clone the disk. Or use the Explorer available in Windows with a copy of MacDrive to transfer your data to Windows' HDD. MacDrive is a most valuable rescue tool, and I heartily recommend it to anybody reading this. It's saved my butt more times than I care to count.
Good luck with your recovery.
Back one more time, because I still haven't found a solution to my sleep problem. I downloaded the appropriate sleep kext, which didn't work, and then I tried the lidsleep kext, which didn't work either (both which I installed with the kext helper). Upon start up I get a very brief message: hibernation image is too old by 5***** seconds. Use forcewake=y to override (this is not precise wording, but it's a message that other people have gotten), but then I boot up normally.
ReplyDeleteMy system configuration:
asus eee pc 1005 HA
installed OS X 10.6.3 using NBM and NBI
Boots cleanly with nothing other than the apple logo showing up
FYI: Don't know the proper way to delete kexts
@misticgoddess
ReplyDeleteRun pfix and use the -f flag to force build a new kext cache. There may be a NBI version of the kext permissions fixer that works with your setup also. Run that as well if you have it.
The message you describe is visible in Chameleon, if I remember correctly, but doesn't seem to be pertinent to much of anything to do with waking from sleep.
I ignore it and sleep works fine on my machine.
HTH.
I installed 10.6 and it worked perfectly, but then all of a sudden when I plug my audio cable into my computer to play sound through my stereo it stops working. Headphones are doing the same thing, it's like a dull noise with a buzzing sound.
ReplyDeleteI installed voodoohda prefpane and the voodoo hda kext but I can't get it fixed
Dammit. I ran pfix 3.1 from My Hack's site and I got a kernel panic.
ReplyDeleteWhen pfix opened in my terminal, it prompted which drive? I typed in -f, then watched it go. When I restarted, KP. Please, what do I do now, since I've never had to deal with a KP before and everything was working smoothly up until then, minus the sleep mode.
@misticgoddess
ReplyDeleteWhen you pfix, you enter the number of the drive that you want the permissions repaired on and nothing else. The -f flag is applied when you reboot into Chameleon - when the Chameleon countdown is running, hit any key to pause in the bootloader screen, type -f (or any other flag you want, each flag separated by a space) and as you type, the characters you're typing will appear bottom left of the bootloader window.
Start your Eee and pause the bootloader as above - type -x (safe mode) and -f (rebuild kext cache) and -v (verbose mode) and continue by hitting enter.
If it hangs, post back with the error message(s) you see on the CLI screen (the white type on black stuff).
HTH.
Never mind. I panicked since it was the first time I ever had a KP on my NB. I ended up using my Install "disk" to get back to my desktop, re-ran NBI and it's back to the way it was. I would love to understand what happened so that I know never to attempt that again. The sleep isn't a big deal, but it would be nice to figure it out.
ReplyDeleteOh, and speedstep isn't working, the CPU-X shows my computer running at 1.6ghz all the time. Is that a problem?
@misticgoddess
ReplyDeleteYou may be one of the lucky few who doesn't need SleepEnabler to get sleep working, so you could remove the kext altogether (trash it, since you can restore it from the trash if need be). If you do remove it, on reboot, use the -f and -x flags. Once successfully booted into your desktop, restart normally.
SpeedStep requires the Voodoo power mini kext referenced in a post on the previous page of comments here - the Leopard version works, not the Snow Leopard one, so make sure you download the working version from the site linked to.
It works for me, so hopefully it'll work for you as well. :-)
Lack of SpeedStep is not a problem per sé, but you'll get a little more duration from your battery if it's working and every bit helps.
HTH.
Which folder in the kit are you referring to when you say "Copy all the kext’s I provided to this folder, located inside the folder Kexts in the kit." because there doesn't seem to be a folder in the kit called kexts.
ReplyDelete@Jake
ReplyDeletePlease take the time to read the comments. There's a number of changes, discoveries and clarifications that have been discussed here.
If after reading the comments you can't find what you want to know, then by all means feel free to ask. The question you ask though, has been answered several times already.
Hello... sorry for my (very) bad english... well, i've create the usb bootable install... boot into the eeepc (1008ha) and start the install, but in utility disk i don't see the hard disk!!!! in the bios HD is in ahci mode... help me, thanks!
ReplyDeleteHey Andrew,
ReplyDeleteI posted a while ago about my Mac Mini and now I have come to reinstall it. Just want to double check the process with you to make sure it all seems right.
Firstly follow JoQ's guide until the system is booting on 10.6.0 with no issues.
After this I plan to upgrade to 10.6.3 or 4 and use vanilla kernel with chameleon auto patch - will installing the latest myhack package achieve this? (Naturally I will update sleepenabler and do the graphics stuff as you suggest in previous posts)+ ethernet & wifi kexts.
Is that all that is needed? As in my mind I can't think of anything else that would need to be done?
@Colin
ReplyDeleteIn theory, you have it right. I diverged from the myHack route into NBM and NBI for my upgrade to 10.6.3 simply because I didn't want to use a 'chocolate' kernel and at that time, only the NBI was able to provide kernel patching on load.
Since you're starting from scratch, and therefore have little to lose (except time?), it would be interesting to see how the newest myHack solution works for you.
Before you start, copy all your modded and additional kexts into a folder on your USB drive, then update your USB's Extras/Extensions with those working kexts. It'll save a lot of futzing about with kexts during and post install. And don't forget your pref pane installers. :-)
Looking forward to your soon-to-be-posted tutorial in this very thread.
Best wishes,
Andy.
Hello I need major help!
ReplyDeleteI installed 10.6 just fine with the dell wifi card and the 2 gb extra ram (instead of the 1 gb) and it worked until I upgraded to 10.6.1 and then 10.6.2 -
Now I get a packet error when I try to start...even worse, is I can't get any of the methods I used to originally install to work as a reformatting method.
Is this because I switched to the 2 gb of ram? It asks me to "put in a correct boot disk" or whatever, and then when I load off the harddrive and then open the boot disk in verbose mode, the error comes up as panic(cpu 0 etc, etc..."Unsupported CPU: etc. etc. AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement-90/pmProcessor.c:210
@Everyone...
ReplyDeleteIn the last week or two, including this evening, I have responded at length to a modest number of posts and to my utter amazement, the posts have disappeared. To be totally honest, I don't feel inclined to re-do them, as I neither have the time nor the passion to do so.
This might be a simple tech glitch as relates to Google's BlogSpot, or some thing else entirely. Whichever, I'm taking leave of MacEee for a well-earned sabbatical (I believe), so I won't be around to answer questions or attempt to fix issues. My apologies, but I need a break.
All the very best to my fellow Hackint0shers, and may the 10.6.5 update be the doddle we all hope for. Looking forward to much new stuff from the community when I return.
Cheers.
Hey Andrew,
ReplyDeleteWell deserved vacations indeed!! Thank you for all you ve helped around here. Will be looking forward to your "I' m back!" though :-)
@Andy
ReplyDeleteAll the best! well deserved indeed! Thanks for all your help! I'm sure you've saved thousands of lives!
-Tim
@AndrewNZ
ReplyDeleteEnjoy your break, thanks for all the invaluable help. I for one would have been driven mad without your advice!
For those of you with mac desktops and media collections, take a look at Plex (http://www.plexapp.com), the 1005ha makes an excellent client. Of course you can share iTunes libraries, but Plex has a great front-end for films and TV programmes, which you can navigate with the keyboard.
If I have OSX Tiger, can I use Tiger to create a USB installer? Or do I need OSX with Snow Leopard installed on it?
ReplyDeleteGot everything working but the sleep issue that some people in the comments are having. When I manually hit sleep or close the lid to sleep it, it won't wake up at all. It will time out sleep and wake up from that just fine. Anyone have a solution?
ReplyDeleteAlso, I'm using 10.6.0 using the blog's installation directions (using an updated myhack and pfix).
ReplyDeleteHere's my little guide to the way I got my eeepc 1005ha on 10.6.4 Mac OS X. I don't use NBI auto patcher as I couldnt get it to work. Instead I used a downloaded patched kernel and it works great.
ReplyDeleteFirstly I followed this guide to the letter, but upgraded the myhack to the latest version.
Once I had finished following what JoQ had written in his guide I installed this ethernet adapter:
http://code.google.com/p/iats/downloads/detail?name=build_x64_20100425.zip&can=2&q=
I installed using kexthelper and ran pfix before restarting.
Then I downloaded the 10.6.4 Combo Update (google it and make sure you don't select the Server version) and also the 10.4.0 patched mach_kernel file found here to my desktop:
http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=197020&st=0
I also backed up "AppleIntelGMA950" and AppleIntelIntegratedFrameBuffer" kexts from /System/Library/Extensions (just drag and drop to your desktop)
I then ran the combo update file - once it had finished and before I clicked the restart button I replaced the mach_kernel with the one I downloaded.
(follow these instructions to properly install mach_kernel)
1. Download zip to Desktop
2. Unzip by double click
3. Open Terminal.app
4. sudo -s
5. Enter your root password
6. cd /
7. mv mach_kernel mach_kernel_1062
8. cp ~/Desktop/mach_kernel_atom /
9. mv /mach_kernel_atom mach_kernel
10. chown 0:0 mach_kernel
Then clicked restart on the combo installer window.
Once it had rebooted I installed this wifi kext to get the original internal wifi working:
http://uploading.com/files/get/94fm2e33/
as well as the two graphics kexts that were backed up to the desktop using kexthelper and then ran pfix and restarted.
(If you still don't have the right resolution on boot, try installing the graphics kexts again via kexthelper and pfix and do a final reboot)
I think I have added all my steps. Have fun with your new 10.6.4 eeepc. Also feel free to use the Software update to download the updates apple has. (just be sure that there isn't a 10.6.5 update lurking there and if there is deselect it) A reinstall of your 2 graphics kexts may be required again on reboot if you do software update. Remember to use kexthelper and pfix.
When Apple pushes out it's 10.6.5 it will more than likely require a kernel update. Keep an eye on the link where you download the updated kernel for the latest release.
Hope this helps some of you who want to take the prepatched kernel route instead of the auto patch NBI route.
Forgot to add. You may have to reinstall the wifi kext once you have updated software.
ReplyDeleteJust wanted to update and say everything works great!! I updated SL to 10.6.3 using Colin's instructions and my sleep problem went away.
ReplyDeleteThe only issue I have left is speedstep. From earlier comments, it looks like VoodooPowerMini.kext v1.2.4 will fix this, but the download has been taken down from the main site. If anyone could upload their kext, or find another download site, please let me know.
Hi everyone,
ReplyDeleteI've just installed Snow Leopard on a 1005HAG. I did before on a 1005HAM and it was easier.
I used NBI because, unlike Myhack, it doesn't write 100% of the MBR so my Windows 7 can still boot :)
I had to totally disable AHCI otherwise the install wouldn't do. Is it normal? Anyway, i can turn it on again after it's done. Weird.
The mediafire link for the 1005-1008HA kit is dead so i didn't install any of them and i can't test by myself until the link's working again.
Trouble i have : Sound function button doesn't work (using VoodooHDA.kext), pressing the power button doesn't make anything and finally, much worse, wake up from sleep works but...
The screen doesn't! Only the rest! Please tell me which kext of the kit i have to install to fix that, without making an accident because of kext conflicts (regarding those installed by NBI, i'll check that myself). Thank you!
PS: SORRY TO POST AS ANONYMOUS BUT WHEN I WROTE A NAME IT DIDNT LET ME POST!!!
Ok i'm coming back after more test :
ReplyDelete1/ Power button works and i saw in the tutorial that sound function buttons are not supposed to work.
2/ Ethernet does appear in the network prefpane BUT won't get a "normal" IP, so to be short: Doesn't work.
2/ Luckyly i found out that it's not the screen but the backlight that doesn't wake up. Anyone got any idea?
3/ If i install the kexts EvOreboot & Nullcpupowermanagement, only change is screen won't wake up, totally, even without backlight.
4/ Restart works but SHUTDOWN doesn't. I have to do it by pressing power button. I got the kext OSXRestart installed by NBI too, erasing it doesn't change anything.
5/ I tried all things i could but got not result. Shutdown by power button is "ok" but no sleep is REALLY annoying!!! I really hope someone here will help me to resolve that! Thanks!
What version of Snow Leopard are you using? Upgrading to 10.6.3 solved all the problems you described for me.
ReplyDeleteI'm using 10.6.4 and i found another issue : If i use the DSDT provided, then the power button works BUT the battery indicator doesn't anymore! How can i fix it since i wanna use that DSDT?
ReplyDeleteI can try VoodooBattery but afraid of KP :( Tired of re-installing, it takes almost an hour everytime (counting the update time)...
How much ram do you have? Upgrading to 2 gigs is the easiest way to fix that problem.
ReplyDeleteI just got it so only 1GB. I will try soon. Anyway, this problem is not very important COMPARED TO SLEEP! I must get it. Please help me for that :) As well as shutdown... Thanks!
ReplyDeleteOk i tested, you're right about with 2GB i can have both battery indicator and power button working BUT shutdown and sleep are still not working, exactly the same :( So i need another idea from you :D
ReplyDeletePS: Since i took of the 2GB RAM from my laptop, i tested the 1005HA 1GB in it and it could boot but only artifacts (100%!) it has a X3100, kinda weird isn't it?
For those interested in the Dell 1510 wifi card, I just got one from eBay for $20. Arrived from Hong Kong after a couple of weeks. I installed it yesterday in my 1005HA and it works fine.
ReplyDeleteAfter following all the instructions here I got most things working with Snow Leopard. But one strange thing: When I try to make Mac OS go to sleep the screen just goes black immediately and there is no way to wake it up again. I have to press the off button to physically shut it off, then restart.
Any idea anyone?
Thanks for all your valuable info!
Oh, and here is the ebay link for the 1510: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=220633187369
ReplyDeleteI found the solution to the sleep problem (should probably solve it for Anonymous also who mentioned the same issue). Kenneth Wu made a new dstd.aml file for the 1005HA which you can find here: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/3211427/1005ha-dsdt.zip (hopefully still there). Just drop it into /Extra, reboot and there you have it. Also, the screen brightness can be adjusted by the Pause and fn-Delete keys respectively.
ReplyDeleteKenneths solution was mentioned here:
http://code.google.com/p/netbook-installer/issues/detail?id=188
Oh, Kenneth Wu's dstd.aml also took care of the battery meter, which works now for me (even with only 1 GB RAM)
ReplyDeleteThanks, it's really great! Only sad things is since i have a european keyboard, the raise up light function key won't work :(
ReplyDeleteDo you know how can i change the key in the DSDT? I can use the app Spark to make shortcut but it doesn't show me the animation^^
Otherwise, can i get the backlight icon since it exist on real mac? I searched in CoreServices/ExtraMenu but i didn't find it :(
Last (strange thing) : When i go to sleep and wake up, if i had an USB device plugged, it will say it was not ejected properly...
Oh, by the way, can anyone tell me if it's normal i must disable the AHCI in order to install, and then once installed i can enable?
Fotgot to add : Ethernet is recognized with the provided kext but doesn't work even with that new DSDT... And i got some strange but like battery was @100% after reboot and 50% before but well, bugs can happen to OSX too, not just Windows! :)
ReplyDeleteIf i don't use DHCP, it says i'm connected, but in fact not... Safari pages won't load, annoying! How the hell do you get the ethernet working?
ReplyDelete@Anonymous Have at look at my post a bit further up. It has a replacement ethernet kext that is known to work.
ReplyDeleteThanks! There was two version of this kext in the archive, i installed "release"... How's "debug" different?
ReplyDeleteShould i install VoodooPowerMini? If it can help to lower the fan, it would be great...
Hi guys,
ReplyDeleteSomthing goes wrong by me, when I try to boot from my external hdd, only a cursor shows up, no chameleon, even not if I wait a half hour. What did I do wrong?
Thanks(:
Sorry for my bad english..
@Anonymous I installed release so it should be working fine. don't know the difference between the two. As for VoodooPowerMini helping with the fan, I'm not sure as I have never used it.
ReplyDeleteHow long does the battery last? It says 5-6h, i expected more since Windows be up to 10h almost depending what you do... I'll maybe get a big ebay battery. Yeah, the Ethernet kext works, just a bit long to "detect" the cable and find an IP (~15sec).
ReplyDeletesnow leopard graphics update 1.0
ReplyDeleteI have installed it and now I am not able to see any images using preview or any documents in Pages, Numbers, etc. A window will open and show the document title but nothing appears on that window. :-(
Anyone any idea on how to solve this without reinstalling everything from scratch?
Thx in advance!
Sorry i've no idea and it sounds really weird to me! When you open Application folder in the dock, is it smooth or laggy? If it's laggy,y ou need to intall the kexts IntelGMA950 and IntelIngratedFrameBuffer (not sure of their name, should be that) but before, make sure you don't have them in your Extra folder!
ReplyDeleteI already reinstalled those kexts but no luck.
ReplyDeleteI'm having troubles installing Snow Leopard on a Eee PC 1005HAG.
ReplyDeleteProblem is: Installer won't write to disk (or is really really slow).
I can boot on myhacked-USB-SL-Installer and proceed with pre-installation (partition disk, choose components, choose disk, etc.) but when it comes to actually installing (file copying): It's getting stuck on "Time left: about x minutes" and it takes ages (more than 8 hours) to say installation failed.
Error logs says something like:

Google says the disk is defective but it is brand new and working just fine on Windows.
The guide doesn't say anything about AHCI/IDE BIOS configuration... What would I need to use?
You have to turn AHCI OFF, before i did, the install started but blocked right after... That's it!
ReplyDeletePS: WTF google saying the HD is defective?!
Update about blank window when using pages, numbers, preview, etc.
ReplyDeleteThe weird thing is that everything works just fine with word 2008, excel 2008 so it must be an issue that affects only apple apps after the graphics update 1.0 or security update 2010 - 005 since I installed both at the same time.
Thing is, I am still stuck with the problem Anyone any idea?
Blank window issue with everal mac apps (pages, numbers, iPhoto, preview) after graphics update 1.0 and/or security update 2010 - 005 SOLVED!
ReplyDelete1) Reinstalled ALL the .kexts that came with the KIT on this page with the exception of:AttansicL1eEthernet.kext. (I reinstalled all of them because I was not sure which ones had been messed with on the last mac OSX update).
2) Ran pfix and disk utility permissions repair.
3) Executed touch /System/Library/Extensions
4) Rebooted and ...
BINGO!!
Everything working again. Actually, after upgrading to 10.6.4 I always noticed that my machine was not running as smooth as with 10.6.0. Now after this last fix, I sure feel it running much smoother. Before I could even see the dock hesitating when appearing or hidding and now it just pops up as it should, real fast!
So to all of you out there, beware of the latest graphics update 1.0 and/or the security update 2010 - 005.
cheers!
I managed to install SL with AHCI=on by firstly installing on external USB drive, then using Disk Utility to clone the installed partition (USB) on an internal partition: it took a whole night.
ReplyDeleteBooting on this internal drive still takes 30 minutes :-/
Is it possible to turn AHCI on once Snow Leopard is installed (via kext, DSDT or another way)?
Has anyone gotten the trackpad 'disable' button on the upper left to work? It's driving me crazy to type as I hit the trackpad accidentally and the typing goes somewhere else in the document. I tried all the system pref settings and connected a mouse but nothing stops the trackpad.
ReplyDeleteJoQ, thanks for this guide.
ReplyDeleteI have some problem with my installation on a Eee PC 1005HAG.
I find the part where you copy files from your "kit" to the USB installer not very clear: can you provide an exact list of files to copy (specifying from where to where) for both the "Create the USB Installer" step and the "First boot" step ?
Hacking the 1005HA into a Mac is great, but losing the 'trackpad turn off' button in the upper left was not great. I finally found the small program "Sausage Fingers" on the Apple website that lets you turn it off with a menu item.
ReplyDelete1005HA native Wifi card support for SnowLeopard 10.6 to 10.6.4 tutorial and kext here : http://gezus.homelinux.free.fr/?Install-Snow-Leopard-sur-netbook&var_mode=calcul
ReplyDeletetodo ok!!! despues de 4 intentos funciono !!! muchisimas gracias. saludos desde corrientes - argentina :)
ReplyDelete@Colin - I followed your steps and now am running SL 10.6.4. The only problem I am having is stock wifi does not work and I using the kext from http://uploading.com/files/get/94fm2e33/
ReplyDeleteThanks for your help
I tried installing the wifi kext again and then ran pfix. Restart with -f option and bingo, have wifi now!!
ReplyDeleteThanks everyone for the awesome info. as now I have an awesome netbook.
I have fully updated my 1005HAB to 10.6.4 plus Graphics Update and Security Updates. This is how.
ReplyDelete(my steps)
1. I followed this guide to the very last step.
2. I downloaded the latest MyHack, as of now 1.1, and pfix 3.1
MyHack: http://maceee.blogspot.com/2010/02/snoweee-install-mac-os-x-snow-leopard.html
pfix: http://osx86.sojugarden.com/2010/06/pfix-v3-1-released/
3. I first ran the newer MyHack. It may take a while, like the last version. Check the options in customize as like JoQ did.
4. Then I replaced the Extra files from the kit with the one is the Extra folder in my hard drive
5. Then I placed all the 10 kexts from the kit in the /System/Library/Extensions/ folder in my hard drive
6. wait a few minutes to let the system recognize the kexts. It will say "This extension cannot be used…" Just press ok
7. Then run the new pfix you downloaded. It may take a while, 10-15 minutes
8. Then Reboot to make sure everything is working
(steps 9-13 are expanded from Colins earlier post)
9. Download the 10.6.4 Combo Update + the modded kernel 10.4.0 (http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=197020&st=0)as Colin said earlier
10. Backup AppleIntelGMA950.kext and AppleIntelIntegratedFramebuffer.kext to desktop
11. Run the combo update but don't restart
12. Replace the kernel per Colins instructions, then reboot
13. install the two kexts backed up with kext helper and run pfix
14 all done
(my steps)
15 security updates are ok to install
16 graphics update, must do step 12 over again and reboot
17 jump around
Compiled with own instructions and instructions from AndrewNZ, Colin, and all the other awesome people on this blog
Have fun,
Pccw9
Hi nice guide.....when I unzip the KIT I do not get a folder called Kexts as per the section "Copy all the kext’s I provided to this folder, located inside the folder Kexts in the kit.". I simple have folders called Extra (no Kext Folder in here) Sound and System ( there are Kexts in here under System > Library > Extensions).
ReplyDeleteI have had some experience with Hackintosh and am aware of the concepts and I wanted to follow the guide as described but can't seem to located the folder.
Am I missing something here?
Thanks
Ducatiss
Hi
ReplyDeleteAfter reading the 695 posts I notice my question above has been asked previously and answered by AndrewNZ - but I still do not see the Extensions folder under the Extra folder. I have enabled hidden files via "defaults write com.apple.Finder AppleShowAllFiles TRUE" but still no cigar.
Sorry for posting newbie type question but these files are vital to the install and I can't seem to located them.
Thanks
Ducatiss
Hi Ducatiss,
ReplyDelete(im guessing you have already run the MyHack installer)
To clarify, after copying the all the files in extra from the kit to the extra folder on your hard drive, then you copy the files in /System/Library/Extensions in the kit to the same folder on your hard drive. The extra and the folder with the kexts are different. The kexts needed to copy are in a folder in the kit separate from Extra called System. copy all the 10 kexts in there to /System/Library/Extensions on your hard drive.
then run pfix on your hard drive,
reboot

ReplyDeleteThanks for your reply. I understand your instructions. In fact I did exactly what you have stated in my first ( and only attempt at this stage) interpretation of the instructions which resulted in a eeepc with no USB or Keyboard or trackpad.
I will give it another go and let you guys know.
Thanks for the response much appreciated.
Ducatiss
Hi
ReplyDeleteJust an update ... it was my mistake to get issues on a previous install and I now have a working OSX install on 1005HA. I think I missed the pfix instructions in a previous attempt.
Nice !!
Thanks Pccw9
Thanks others who have contributed to this blog.

Hi
ReplyDeleteManaged to install with the instructions provided on a 1005HA. Everything works except the keyboard. Some of the keys on the built in keyboard like O, K, L, M etc do not work. I assume this has something to do with the Function Key. Any advice?
Thanks
The easiest way. used iAtkos v7 to install snow 2.6.3.on eee1005pe, used chamelion-v4 to dual boot win7 ult.
ReplyDeletemac released an update to 2.6.4 which is the latest.
i use an external G-SKY usb 500mw card. there is a download fix for 800x600. sound works,touchpad,eth/wifi doesnt work.(they light up though). fan runs full speed(i didt select thermal).The duall boot is tricky. you have to format it fat then in windows ntfs.
Hey Matt,
ReplyDeleteUm i have the 1005HAB, which is the same thing as yours but i am missing something from yours, i think yours has bluetooth and i dont, thats the only difference between HA and HAB.
So about you keyboard, are you saying that your regular keys, like O K L aren't working at all? I haven't had this problem, and have installed OS X a few times on my 1005HAB. I recommend you reinstall the ten kexts in the kit, run pfix and reboot and see if that fixes it. Or if you had to open your computer to change the wireless card, your keyboard ribbon is securely connected to the motherboard. I had the same problem, and it was because the keyboard wasnt fully connected to the motherboard
Pccw9
Hi Pccw9
ReplyDeleteI m running this with 10.6.4. Every works ok including the internal original wifi card, battery meter, blueetooth detected. I did not open the chasis because the original card works.
After reapplying the 10 kexts and running fix now I hv lost both the keyboard n mouse :-) external and internal
Oh man im sorry, when I had the problem and that did the trick..do you have the latest pfix 3.1? the one included in this kit is out of date, 2.x or something. Try installing them again using the new pfix, or run myhack installer (newest version) again run pfix and reboot. i think it will be fixed if you rerun myhack :/ look at my post earlier on what i did to get everything working on 10.6.4.
ReplyDeletesorry for you keyboard and mouse hope this helps.
Well, i'm trying to make a dualboot with Win7, i don't want to lose it beacouse i use it on work, and i have a question: Chameleon is the native boot of SnowLeopard?
ReplyDeleteI found a Spanish tutorial to make the dualboot with a little program and without uninstall Windows7, and i'd like to know if i could follow the JoQ tutorial without installing Chameleon.. Thank you!
I bought myself 1005HAB last night and have been playing with it since then to get the OSX working. Ran into mishaps! First external drive got disconnected and fell on ground as I was making install disk. Later as installation neared completion, the computer shut off for lack of power. Took a chance and booted and with some hiccups it did boot and finally everything was working except wifi.
ReplyDeleteEarlier I had 10.6.4 running on Dell Mini 10v and Lenovo S10, but I found 1005HAB a little snappier. Now I am reinstalling it using wonderful instructions here by awesome and helpful folks here.
I was wondering if Matt got the keyboard and mouse back. My advise would be to use Carbon Copy to clone the last working copy so that you can roll back to start again.
Would love to share the progress.
Pccw9
ReplyDeleteI have this question I hope you would advise me.
When you say followed the guide up to the last step, do you mean you also ran older MyHack Installer, copied files and ran older PFix?
Or did you leave those steps out and instead ran the new MyHack Installer and Pfix etc as you explained in your 22 October post. Would be grateful for help.
Hello Adbul-Majid,
ReplyDeleteI ran the older MyHack, copied files, then ran the older pfix.
To be honest, I don't see the difference between doing what I did, and as you suggest, just update and run the new pfix (btw is 3.1), just a shorter solution, but I just wanted to make sure everything was working before I updated my system. You could do it either way I am guessing, but what worked for me was running the old one copy files and run old pfix, then run the new installer copy files and run new pfix, then i did my steps.
~~~revision to my guide earlier, for the graphics update, must to step 13 over again, not 12. 13 is for the 2 kexts to install over again, 12 is for the kernel, dont do 12 over after the graphics update
Thank you so much Pccw9 for your prompt response.
ReplyDeleteRight now I am cloning the initial install and then go ahead and run the new installer and pfix and see how it goes.
In case things don't work out, I will use the method followed by you. But while you are still there, hopefully, let me ask this too. After running older installer and pfix, did you reboot the system before running newer installer and pfix, and ran these immediately after running the older ones and without rebooting?
Im trying to do an initial install of 10.6.0 on a 1005ha. I followed the instructions on the website (tried myhack 1.0 and 1.1) and am able to load chamelion, but once i select the usb drive to run the install dvd, i briefly see the grey screen with apple logo, then get a kernel panic. i tried playing with some settings - turning off wifi, bluetooth, camera - plugging in the usb keyboard/mouse from the get go with no luck. i tried netbookmaker also instead of myhack with no luck - i get to the grey screen with apple logo but dont see the spinning wheel after waiting 10 minutes. atleast no kp with nbm
ReplyDeleteAbdul,
ReplyDelete1. so install, boot up, run old myhack, copy files, run old pfix reboot
2. make sure everything working, install new myhack and copy files then run new pfix reboot
3. make sure everything working, then update as my instructions
Patty,
I had a similar problem, with the installer not working. I strongly suggest using the myhack and all the materials to make the setup provided by the poster, JoQ, in the kit he made. Follow each step, TO THE LETTER. each is important when making the installer. make sure you did everything in the post to make it. Also, make sure the disk you are using
is the the right one, a snow leopard disk that is 10.6.2 or above will not work. you must have the initial disk that came out on launch, 10.6.0. it cannot be 10.6.2 or above
good luck
Hey,
ReplyDeletewhen I try installing w/ MyHack, it doesn't find my (SATA) HDD. Do I have to change sth. in my Bios?
Thanks for help.
I have a chocolate kernel with 10.6.1 running (all hardware works fine). Install 10.6.4 amb mac OS don't boot why?
ReplyDeletehello I am a new here but i am looking foward to buy an Asus Eee PC 1005HAB-RBLK003X I just want to make sure it all works before I buy it can anyone confirm that everything works on this netbook. Also what does this mean at the top of the page "WiFi (exchange the original with a Dell 1510 or any other halfsize PCI you know works)" does it mean i need to replace the original wificard? thanks in advance
ReplyDeletenico,
ReplyDeletein my bios under advanced IDE config i have the IDE config to enhanced, and set the SATA config to AHCI, and im all good on my end
Borja,
the vanilla kernel (original kernel by apple) will work fine with 10.6.1, its 10.6.2 and further you need a modded kernel. You had it working, but you updated and thus changed the kernel to the apple vanilla kernel that comes with 10.6.2 and above that is incompatible with netbooks with an atom processor. you need to follow this guide and then follow my comment on how to update to 10.6.4 that i posted oct 22 (then further as i revised a step in a later post). you need to reinstall OSX sadly, i dont know how to fix it from outside osx. btw did u use myhack or NBI? as i do not use NBI and do not recommend it, as myhack is better
anonymous,
please use a real name, it is hard to reply with many people using it thanks. I have a 1005hab also, but my code is a lil different. i think it is the same thing.mine works fine. just follow the guide and my post on oct 22 and further on info on how to update to 10.6.4 if you want to.
if your specs match mine, then it should be fine
intel atom n270
GMA 950
1 or 2GB of ram
Sata HD
rest is the regular hardware, synaptics etc.
just follow the guide and read the comments before you ask a question that might have already been answered
as for wifi, there is a kext to get the wifi working thats in the 1005hab, but when i tried it it didnt work, so i exchanged my card for a dell 1510. keep in mind opening your netbook voids the warranty.
Hi,
ReplyDeleteI have Mac OS X version 10.6.3 retail DVD. I have a question that can I use it to create usb installer. Thank you.
Beer
Where can I find a Dell 1510 or another card that is compatible can anyone point me in that direction how much will it cost me? thanks
ReplyDeleteIts me again sorry I was wondering I have a macbook that has a broken screen and it has a wifi card will I be able to use that one?
ReplyDeleteHi I installed macos x according to instructions and then i updated to 10.6.4.
ReplyDeleteMy problem is that the battery indicator is not working (baterry with x), and sleep function is not working.
Can someone tell me the kexts that are responsible for these two functions in order to reinstall them.
Thank you in advance
Anyone tried to update to 10.6.5 yet?
ReplyDelete10.6.5?
ReplyDeleteMac OS Update 10.6.5
ReplyDeletei updated to 10.6.5 using the same method as updating to 10.6.5. this is credit to colin above
ReplyDeleteI downloaded the 10.6.5 Combo Update (google it and make sure you don't select the Server version) and also the 10.5.0 patched mach_kernel file found here to my desktop:
http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=197020&st=0
I also backed up "AppleIntelGMA950" and AppleIntelIntegratedFrameBuffer" kexts from /System/Library/Extensions (just drag and drop to your desktop)
I then ran the combo update file - once it had finished and before I clicked the restart button I replaced the mach_kernel with the one I downloaded.
(follow these instructions to properly install mach_kernel)
1. Download zip to Desktop
2. Unzip by double click
3. Open Terminal.app
4. sudo -s
5. Enter your root password
6. cd /
7. mv mach_kernel mach_kernel_1063
8. cp ~/Desktop/mach_kernel_atom /
9. mv /mach_kernel_atom mach_kernel
10. chown 0:0 mach_kernel
Then clicked restart on the combo installer window.
Once it had rebooted I installed this wifi kext to get the original internal wifi working:
http://uploading.com/files/get/94fm2e33/
as well as the two graphics kexts that were backed up to the desktop using kexthelper and then ran pfix and restarted.
(If you still don't have the right resolution on boot, try installing the graphics kexts again via kexthelper and pfix and do a final reboot)
Hello everybody,
ReplyDeleteI have followed this website religiously over the last few days and have resultantly managed to successfully follow the basic guide. I now have my own maceee...
I don't know if anybody else has noticed but there are more than 700 comments on this tutorial. Isn't it time that we write a new guide or compile a faq?
I guess I have two quick questions to ask of everybody.
1) From the original guide for 10.6 can I just jump to the 10.6.5 update? Or do we need to take babysteps? What is the correct process?
UPDATE --> This is since I installed 10.6.5 (as per previous post) on to my 10.6 and can't boot anymore!! Suggestions please.
-> If i need to reinstall everything, maybe someone can create a guide/package that jumps straight to 10.6.5 with WIFI/SLEEP/RESOLUTION/KEYBOARD fixed.
Question 2)
How do we return to the eeePC 1005HA XP setup if I have totally reformatted my PC? Can anybody upload an ISO of the original eeePC bootloader that comes with the system? (just cause I haven't seen any guides for returning back to the original configuration)
I would greatly appreciate your advice and will post a guide/review to help.
I followed the guide from 10.6 to 10.6.5 and my MAC isn't booting either. Any ideas?
ReplyDeleteBoot with -v option and see what it says. Did you remove your sleepenabler.kext. If you didn't you will get a crash. Use the -v option and see if it says anything about sleepenable.kext and post back
ReplyDelete@Rob, thanks for replying and coming to my help. I have used "-v" and see a few lines of text speed past (can't read these) followed by a black screen of death. As I'm a macnoob, i will go ahead and reinstall 10.6.
ReplyDeleteAny tips of how to get to 10.6.5 from 10.6?
Any tips on reverting back to eeePC XP?
Well, I upgraded to 10.6.5 (I didn't do the mach kernel part, I just removed the sleepenabler kext and replaced it with a compatible version for 10.6.5 AFTER running the combo update as well as reinstalled the two graphic kexts [AppleIntelGMA950.kext and AppleIntelIntegratedFramebuffer.kext as in previous upgrades)
ReplyDeleteNow, the only issues I found so far are:
1) Safari crashes with the latest version of the flash player plugin (something that seems to be happening to non hackintoshes as well.)
2) The dock kinda hesitates when opening but is lightning fast when hidding. No idea what this could be, only thing I know is that it used to do the same thing with 10.6.0 and then when I upgraded to 10.6.4 it worked flawlessly.
Any ideas anyone on how to correct the dock issue?
Ok, so I've got a question. I am unable to find someone locally who has a mac for me to borrow to work on this conversion. i bought a 1005 from Tigerdirect. i've already switched out the wifi card with one from Dell that Snow leopard already has the driver for. So now i'm unable to access the internet with it currently running Windows XP. I've got a 16gb? USB Drive and a retail copy of 10.6.3 that i bought off of ebay. But i can't find anybody that will loan me there mac for 2 hours to Do the restore process. Anybody out there capable of handling that part for me if i provide them the USB Drive, Snow Leopard and any other info they need? Any help is appreciated. You can email me at thomask@netins.net. Thanks Thomas
ReplyDeleteWhy disk utility doesn't show my internal drive? I tried to boot netbook with Seria-Ata as IDE and AHCI too, but no results... It just shows usb external drive.
ReplyDeleteHow to solve this question?
I did install the SL 10.6 as per guide, everything works fine except I can't boot from the HD with boot0: error. I have only 1 HD 320GB. I can boot from the USB with no issues.
ReplyDeleteI've tried many times to install boot loaders but no go..
can some one help?
I've tried following the guide exactly as described but after selecting the OS X install drive in Chameleon, the screen changes to the grey logo screen and hangs there indefinitely (we're talking 40 minutes and up).
ReplyDeleteIf I use "-v" the load scrolls by too fast to read and then hangs on a black screen.
Does anyone have any ideas how I can get past this issue? I have an 1005hab. I've read some many success stories about people with the same system using this guide. It's really frustrating that I can't get it to work.
Hello - I was hoping to get some help. I was able to load OSX 10.6.3 on my EEE 1005HAB.
ReplyDeleteBased on my hardware info, I have a Intel 945GME Graphics card. My system runs fine, but my resolution is stuck at 800x600.
I've tried reinstalling the Intel950GCA and framebuffer kexts from this guide, and all i get after reboot is a blank grey screen.
Any help or tips on how to get the screen resolution to work correctly on my display??
my computer just sets at preparing to install for hours. any ideas why?
ReplyDeleteHi, I've installed 10.6.0 on my 1005HA and it's running almost perfectly :) I'm using the Dell 1510 which lets me connect to the WLAN without problems. The only (small) problem I do have is that I have to connect to the network manually every time I switch on the computer or wake it up. System preferences show the WLAN as active but it won't connect to a network automatically...and ideas on how I can change that?
ReplyDeleteThank you for your help! This site and it's users are such a great source for people that plan on using Mac OS X on a netbook!
@ Vincent. Sounds like we have the same system. What method and settings did you use to install 10.6.3? I've tried a number of times but the process always hangs on the gray Apple logo screen before getting to the language section screen.
ReplyDeleteI used the iATKOS s3 version 2 installation package, and seemed to have worked fine after a few attempts at playing around with the customization options. The main issues that make the install hang for me the first time is selecting any of the VGA drivers on the customization screen. Just leave all VGA blank. Make sure you select the Atom Kernel option as well.
ReplyDeleteI chose only the bare minimum customization drivers on the install, and figure I would deal w/ the kexts after I have a working OS.
So now I have working wireless, sound, battery, and webcam. However I just don't have working 1028x600 video working.
If anyone has any suggestions it would be very appreciated!!
Does anyone know if I have to install 10.6.4 to get internet working or can I just install the IO80211Family.kext?
ReplyDeleteno the IO80211Family.kext will cause a Kernel Panic, or, like on mine, cause an endless startup (where the grey screen keeps spinning, then stops, the the spinny ball of death, and then crashed). You have to update to 10.6.4 to get it to work. Follow my blog at http://technotalkblog.wordpress.com to learn how to update to 10.6.4 and/or 10.6.5
ReplyDeleteHi there,
ReplyDeleteFirst of all thank you very much for all your hard work, i have my 1005ha working and it is awesome! The only problem i seem to be having is the resolution. I have those two kexts in system/libtary/extensions but still only have 800x600! Any ideas what i've done wrong or how i can reinstall them? Can I just take them from the original zip file and replace the ones i have?
Appologies for the premature post. I figured I did something wrong with the install - having downloaded a kexthelp file and reinstalled the two files mentioned earlier in the blog relating to resolution. This just gave me a grey screen on startup so I reinstalled OSX and it now works perfectly!! I must have done something wrong and being more familiar with the process must have done it right second time round.
ReplyDeleteThanks again!!!
Does anyone have VGA out working? I can't seem to get my VGA out to work? Whenever I connect my VGA to the netbook, all I get is a blank screen on my larger monitor. No icons, no mouse, nothing. Just a wallpaper
ReplyDeleteNevermind, its all good. Just a faulty VGA cable.
ReplyDeleteHey guys just an update that 10.6.5 is okay to install. Just update the kernel like before with the one for 10.6.5 from teateam (google it) but my broadcom wifi stopped working, so i just replaced the IO80211Family.kext with the one from 10.6.4 and all is well
ReplyDeletecheers
stuck...when i start the net book up and go through installation, it says to restart every time. help!!!
ReplyDeleteI followed your instructions exactly and whenever I select to boot to the usb drive all I am greeted with is a flashing underscore. What is going wrong?
ReplyDeleteOkay, so I was able to get it to install but not perfectly.
ReplyDeleteIn order to even get it to boot, i had to manually install then newest version of chameleon via terminal (except I did not replace boot.) Setup proceeded to nearly 100% then it says it failed. Lies. Restarted, loaded up chameleon again, pressed a key to cancel, and then loaded the harddrive. Went through the setup and installed the myhack as per the instructions. After copying over the kexts I was greeted with a schlew of errors about kexts being unable to be used, and voodoo also errored on me but my speakers work. pfix also hangs on "Update system kext info caches for the root volume..."
Things that DONT work:
1. Brightness keys do not work. Would appreciate this to work.
2. Closing the lid and reopening means the screen will NOT turn back on. Pressing keys does nothing and the computer must be restarted.
Any help fixing the above would be appreciated.
And a couple more things:
ReplyDeleteI tried using a terminal shell as admin to install the kexts and that failed. Said there was a permissions error, but I chmodded 755 before using kextutil. I installed with kext Helper and it said it was successful but brightness still does not work, nor does the battery indicator.
I also cannot get itunes / the computer to recognize my iphone over the usb cables.
I'm having a really weird problem on my 1001P Asus EEE. I'm installing onto an SDHC card with 16GB of space. Both 10.5.6 and 10.6.0 external DVD or USB stick contain the OS, and both boot fine to the installer. I select my SD card as the install location, and it's off to the races. At a random point somewhere in the install process, the whole thing hangs and the drives don't serve up data anymore. After 2-3 hours, it fails and gives an error. The log is always freezing at a different place. I notice that the screen sometimes freezes up, but if I wiggle the mouse or toggle caps lock the install progress bar jumps and wakes up.
ReplyDeleteI think it's powering down the card at a certain point, but I've tried to do the install while whacking the keys to keep it awake, but it still happens. Any ideas what's up? It's KILLING me!
Hello all and happy xmas to ya! So I've gotten my 1005 working nicely with 10.6.4 following JoQ and Collin above and using Kenny Wu's dhdt. But I still have a problem with wifi and I haven't figured out if anyone else has the same problem / have a fix to the problem.
ReplyDeleteUsing the wifi kext mentioned (IO80211Family) I just realized that I am able to connect to some networks (visiting my parents for xmas), but my home network (airport express n (b g comp)) is not working. So the wifi-card works, but when connect to my home network I just get an exclamation mark in the airport menu bar when connected to my home network. Looking at the network pref. I see that I just get an self-assigned IP for some reason.
Anyone have an idea or a solution to my problem? Thanks!
Hi
ReplyDeletei followed the guide carefully and when i get to myHack Installer and select my usb, my screen just switches to a gray screen with the Myhack logo in the middle(MyHack "Taking the iSuck out of iHack")
Please help me
Philip N, you must change your home network to 802.11g/b and disable the 802.11n. This is a known issue with using the internal card in those systems.
ReplyDeleteany problem with 10.6.6?
ReplyDeleteNo issues experienced upgrading from 10.6.5. to 10.6.6
ReplyDeleteWhere is the new kernel? my 1005ha is freeze
ReplyDeletehow can i update to 10.6.6?
ReplyDeleteI just used the same method for upgrading to 10.6.4 described in earlier posts and it worked just fine for me.
ReplyDeleteso as i read from all u the only thing that it will not work is the wifi but all the other will work greak on my eee pc???
ReplyDeleteSorry if this has already been answered. I spent quite some time combing through the comments, but figured I would ask my questions straight out for advice.
ReplyDeleteI am about to attempt to but SL on my 1005HAB. I have everything required EXCEPT that my retail SL disk is version 10.6.3. I downloaded the "SL kit" and saw that it includes myHack v1.0. On myHack's site it says that the new version works with 10.6.3, so my question is can I replace the myHack in the "kit" with v1.1 and be okay for an install with 10.6.3?
Also, I have read a bunch of comments stating that the stock WLAN works on g networks. If that is what I am running in my home, will I still have to replace the card?
Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.
@alan c
ReplyDeleteYou say that the engenius wifi dongle is bullet proof, how exactly do you get it going? I have everything working, but, im not sure how to configure the system to recognize the dongle.
Hi, I know I'm nearly a year out of date on this but I've been trying to install SL and its not working for me. I followed the instructions explicitly. I get to booting from the USB, I then get the circles at the bottom of the screen that allow me to choose from mac or windows. I've tried all combinations as well as typing "-v" (verbose) but I always end up with either the grey screen that says "myhack - taking the isuck out of ihack" or I get a black screen. I have yet to see any mac interface or screens. Any ideas? Help would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks. Scott
ReplyDeleteHi I'd like to get a mac osx on my 1005ha but I don't have a another computer with osx nor th retail dvd. Can I solve it???
ReplyDelete@JG03000
ReplyDeleteIf you want to clean install SL 10.6.3, you need myHack v1.1. I believe v1.0 doesn't work with 10.6.3.
If you only use 802.11g at home, you don't need to change your wireless NIC. It works perfectly.
@rushton (Scott)
ReplyDeleteI also had problems with the initial installation but i solved it by selecting the 'Chocolate kernel' when customising the USB installer and when it came time to install to the netbook, i substituted with the atom kernel.
And you think you've got problems.... i'm wondering how to turn my poo into diamonds.
Thanks for this great looking guide. Many of the comments look very useful too.
ReplyDeleteI have one question: It is essential to have an external keyboard plugged in to perform the install, or can everything be done via an external mouse? The thing is, I don't have a USB keyboard to use. I do have a USB mouse though.
@Jonathan NZ
ReplyDeleteI've successfully installed OSX 10.6.0 on my 1005HA. I've had to do it a couple of times actually. and i found that sometimes it would only work with a USB Keyboard and mouse, and sometimes I didn't need it at all. And based on people's experience through the comments, it looks the same so you'll have to try it out for yourself. sometimes it works...sometimes it doesnt. good luck
Ah, I blew it. Had a nice 10.6.0 install running perfectly on my wife's 1005HA, then she did a software update and now it won't boot. I guess it has 10.6.6 on it now, and no Atom support.
ReplyDeleteCan anyone advice me how to proceed? Is there a way to bring it back to life without having to go through all the work again. While saving the data on her HD as well (no backup, yes my fault...shoot me)
Can I somehow just stick in a modded 10.6.6. kernel as it stands? Or will that plunge me into another week of tweaking before it works again?
Where do you get modded 10.6.6. kernels anyway? Have not found any link so far.
Hi i get stuck at chameleon. The black splash page apears but theres nothing prompting the selection of my usb drive. I tried booting -v but all i got was a blank sceeen after a bunch of texts appeared
ReplyDeleteWhen i press enter at the black chameleon splash screen i get a teal colored myhack splash page
ReplyDeletego here!!! the real ish for asus 1005HA with osx!!!
Anyone tried updating to 10.6.7 already?
ReplyDeleteJust downloaded the 10.6.7 Combo Update. Installed it on an older iMac with no problems. I'm a little leery putting it on my Asus 1005 since I'm running 10.6.4 with little issue (lid sleep not working, WiFi not auto-discovering but working fine). I upgraded to 10.6.4 because the Apple Developer tools won't run on 10.6.0. Found a post that someone had tried a beta 10.6.7 on these Asus netbooks and could not get the WiFi working. Anxiously awaiting a braver soul to take the plunge!
ReplyDeleteThak You. Traing
ReplyDeleteI Used myHack_Installer_1.0_RC5.2_r93 and i Had lot
ReplyDeleteoff problems.
First when i copy de ext dosent work wifi and audio
and graphics only in 800x600.
So i recopy ext and run fix after that everything goes worst. Luck my system whn triaing to load OSX
I m stuck. THX.
Upgraded to 10.6.7 without any problems. Everything is still working fine! :-)
ReplyDeleteAnyone know if it is possible to install VMWare on a hackintoshed 1005HAB running v6.4? I don't want to screw things up. Thanks
ReplyDeleteSorry if I was not specific. I want to instal windows 7 - I own a copy of it. I wanted to instal vmware Fusion in order to instal Windows, since I deleted the hard drive of my Asus.
ReplyDeleteHas anyone tried it? Thanks
so i downloaded everyhting and followed the steps but when i try to boot off the usb it just goes blank with a flashing _ in the left hand corner
ReplyDeleteWhen I try to download the wifi kext from above it doesn't download. How can I get that kext so that my original wifi card will work?
ReplyDeleteHow exactly do I replace the mac_kernel when I do the update to 10.6.4. I did it once and then got a kernel panic so I have to redo the whole thing. I've worked for 2 days on this computer and now have to redo it all. Any advice PLEASE!
ReplyDelete@Alien
ReplyDeleteGood to hear your install went as planned.
Have 10.6.7 working with the exception of the cooling fans. Seems to be idling around 45ºC and hits 70C on occasions which isn't pretty. Fans are fine in Win7 so something has changed for me. Oh well, google is my friend. :-)
Cheers.
Has anyone being able to instal iWork on the 1005HAB? If so did it work just fine or did you encounter problems? Thanks
ReplyDeleteI am very impressed with your works here! An will definitely be donating once I have got the set-uo running ;)
ReplyDeleteBefore I start, I would like to ask if it would be possible to install this over my linux partition on Local disk D an have chameleon replace the linux Bootloader? Or will I need to completely reformat the whole HDD? Cheers!
Update on my 10.6.7 update fan dramas...
ReplyDeleteAfter a whole lot of trawling through the web, I finally found an AppleSMBIOS.kext modded by AnV which not only seems to have mysteriously returned the cooling fans to normal working condition, but also enabled the second ("Battery") tab in the Energy Saver preferences. I have no idea why that should be the case but I suppose I was getting some conflict with another related kext.
Who knows.
So if you have those issues, google the above.
An interesting development I have is that since the latest update, the apple logo and spinning thing boot-screen is no longer at native 1024x600 but some crummy 4:3 proportion making it stretched. Before the 10.6.7 update, I also upgraded my Chameleon bootloader to the latest 'release' version, so I believe that has affected the boot screen.
So now I have to try to downgrade to a properly working version, something a lot easier said than done. Grrrr...
Anyone knowing of a working Chameleon that supports the 1024x600 (or other widescreen format)... feel free to share.
Meanwhile, back to the web I go to waste several more days to get back to where it was.
Ho hum...
Cheers all,
Andy
On my 1005HAB I've got everything working on 10.6.6 except for the following:
ReplyDelete* Power button doesn't do anything
* Lid closed - doesn't go to sleep
* When battery goes down completely the computer just dies without going to sleep/hybernation.
* SpeedStepping - I've tried VoodooPowerMini 1.2.7, which caused KP. I can't find 1.2.4 anywhere, would love to try it.
CPU-X shows it always running at 1599MHz
SpeedStepping is the main thing I'd like to get going.
Thanks to all of you for great guides.
A-HA! Finally stumbled on VoodooPowerMini 1.2.4 when I wasn't even looking for it.
ReplyDeleteInstalled it with KextHelper, pfix, reboot and voila! CPU-X shows it change between 799 and 1599.
Wohoo!
(I spent a whole day trying to get it to work a few days ago, so you must understand my excitement).
Here's the link to a comment that references a zip file that has the kext as a part of it:
http://smallcomputing.net/forums/index.php/topic,60.msg512.html#msg512
Enjoy.
Anyone tried to upgrade to OSX LION?
ReplyDelete@alien
ReplyDeleteHaving had some significant setbacks with the 10.6.7 update, I'm thinking of leaving this untouched for a while. Given that Lion will demand a two core CPU before it'll install or run, sounds like the devs will need to do some more fancy kernel patching and adding kexts to enable functionality.
Have you seen anything yet where Lion has been run of a single core CPU? I'd be keen to check it out.
My bootscreen issues have been solved by using a newer version of the NBI bootloader which 'sees' the 1024x600 res as VESA compatible.
Everything else is working as for 10.6.6 except the cooling fan driver required calibrating by booting without the battery installed, shutting down, unplugging the charger before pressing the power button with no charger and no battery, and then booting back up on battery only.
Since then all seems to be good, no elevated temps (maxing out at mid-fifties even running Flash video), and it's great having both tabs back in Energy Saver preferences.
Cheers.
@AndrewNZ
ReplyDeleteSorry to hear you had troubles with 10.6.7 :-(
Actually I just followed your instructions for upgrading as in earlier updates and everything seems to be running just fine for me.
I will certainly share if I find anything out there :-)
@alien
ReplyDeleteThe bootscreen thing was unrelated, as I coincidentally chose to 'upgrade' my bootloader at the same time, not especially bright.
The fans issue seems to be quite common with the 1005HA and 10.6.7. Glad yours is fault-free though. Probably down to some obscure kext interfering with another, and lord knows I have altered kexts for this or that reason over time.
Do you have both Energy Saver preference tabs visible on your machine? Mine's all sweet now that I replaced the SMBIOS kext, yet it was working fine prior to the 10.6.7 update. Hard to say if there was a problem with the kext or my DSDT, but whichever, it's golden again. :-)
Thanks for the sympathy dude, and ditto on posting any info about a working kernel for Lion and the 1005HA.
Cheers,
Andy
@Andy
ReplyDeleteI think I am lost :-). What do you mean by "both" energy saver preferences?
@Andy
ReplyDeleteI found this about OSX Lion and Core duo and/or Core solo
http://osxdaily.com/2011/04/08/hack-mac-os-x-lion-for-core-duo-core-solo-mac/
@alien
ReplyDeleteThe pref pane for a MacBook has a tab for the battery and another for the charger so you can have differential screen and HDD timeouts depending on what power source you're using. For example, I have the screen timeout set to "never" on AC, "10 minutes" on battery.
For some reason, I lost the second tab on my Eee after updating to 10.6.7, so the SMBIOS replacement I mentioned a couple of posts up was a welcome fix as I now have both tabs once more.
Thanks for the Lion link. I'll check it out now.
Cheers,
Andy
My eepc will get into the MyHack chameleon loader, but once chameleon finishes loading, it just displays a white screen that has a stretched gray apple in the center. Has anybody else seen this error before?
ReplyDelete@Andy
ReplyDeleteYes, I do have both energy saver tabs :-)
@Alien
ReplyDeleteI reckon you lead a charmed life. :D
Or maybe I was being punished for past sins. :D
Anyway, all good now.
@M3RL1N
ReplyDeleteThere are many reports such as yours, and many possible reasons for them. Best plan of action is to boot into Chameleon, (hit a key during the progress countdown to prevent the kernel being loaded), type -v to invoke verbose (text) mode, hir Enter/Return and tell us what error messages are visible where the system hangs.
Normally, the fault is with the person installing the hack (that's you and me) where you missed a step or somesuch. And sometimes, it's just easier to re-install than try to chase down some glitch or other.
But it's up to you.
Either way, we'll help if we can.
Cheers.
@Andrew
ReplyDeletePast sins (promiscuously playing with kexts, which I have done as well :-)) seems to be the problem I guess unless different 1005 models which I don't think would affect much.
Mine: 1005HA-pu1x-bk
@Alien
ReplyDeleteThe former, most assuredly. :D
I have no clue how to determine the model info of my Eee - it just seems to be a 1005HA (no suffixes of any sort), with an N280 CPU, bluetooth as standard and a 250GB HDD (since upgraded to 320GB so I can have a working clone on a second partition to make recovery from my many errors a much simpler process :D ).
New WD drive benchmarks faster but is noisier, sort of a permanent 'whooshing' sound similar to a system fan. Not intrusive but also not as quiet as the Momentus original.
Was tossing up whether or not to go the SSD route, but the prices were just a joke for anything with a decent capacity, and the performance is wasted on an Atom powered, single core machine.
I'm still impressed with the battery life on this thing - at least 8 hours the way I use it, and it's managed 14 hours on more than one occasion. V cool.
I don't think I could switch to a tablet. It'd cost twice what I paid for this and a tablet can't run Adobe's CS4 suite which this little workhorse manages with aplomb.
All in all, a useful and satisfying piece of kit.
Now, just waiting until the newer gen dual-core and ultra slim netbooks emerge at a decent price, and the Eee will be a hand-me-down for my daughter. Ah tech... ya gotta love it.
Cheers.
@Andrew
ReplyDeleteI too have a N280 processor but a 160GB HD.
Great little thing with amazing battery life, totally agree with you and this one will also end up in my daughter's hands which already is at moments!! :-)
I am typing this message on snow leopard 10.6.7, Apple did an excellent job with this operating system. It is lightening fast and never crash.
